At the July 2004 Ames Senior High School reunion, Class of 1954, Karel and I agreed to organize the next ’54 Class reunion in California sometime in 2006.  We formed an organizing committee consisting of California alums and some other “volunteers” to decide on a date and place.

WHEN    –  October 1-4, 2006 (3 nights).
WHERE –  Granlibakken Conference Center and Lodge, Lake Tahoe, California http://www.granlibakken.com/ .

Granlibakken offers accommodations in a tranquil mountain setting with all the wonders of the High Sierra at your doorstep.  The Lodge is secluded on 74 wooded acres and occupies a picturesque mountain valley.  Spectacular Lake Tahoe is minutes away.  The Lodge is rustic, comfortable, and tranquil as its Norwegian name implies – a hill sheltered by trees.  Granlibakken’s full American plan offers maximum flexibility and a variety of menu choices.  Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style; dinner may be buffet or banquet service.  Granlibakken’s executive chef, Ron Eber, has been satisfying Granlibakken guests for over 20 years with his sumptuous menus.  We have our choice of standard bedrooms or 2-3 bedroom townhouses.  Get together with 1 or 2 of your classmates and reserve a townhouse.  They have a common living room and kitchen and each bedroom has a separate bathroom.  See the floor plans on the Granlibakken web site.

The specifics of our arrangements with Granlibakken are the following:

No. of rooms Granlibakken will guarantee a block of 50 rooms (bedrooms and rooms within townhouses until September 1, 2006 (1 month prior to arrival).  Reservations received after September 1 will be on space available.  Room type is guaranteed once deposit is received.  All participants must be registered at Granlibakken and participate in one of the following packages.

Double Occupancy: $462 per participant (total cost)
Single Occupancy: $642 per participant (total cost)

The above rates are based on $131 per person, per day, double occupancy, and $181 per person, per day, single occupancy including 20% tax and service.

Package 2
The off grounds fee is $278.40 for participants attending the reunion but not requiring lodging at Granlibakken i.e., staying elsewhere.

Registration:
Book your reunion packages directly with the Granlibakken reservations office - http://www.granlibakken.com/  or telephone 800-543-3221.  A $100 deposit per person is due at the time of booking with the balance due 14 days prior to arrival.

Whether traveling by car or plane (or even train – both Reno and Truckee are Amtrak stops), getting there is easy.  Granlibakken is located off Highway 89 about 15 miles south of Truckee which is on I-80.  The most convenient airport is Reno (45 minutes away) and Granlibakken offers its own shuttle service from the airport. 

Larry and Pat Knudsen have generously extended an invitation to a cocktail party in their Reno town house on Sunday, October 1, prior to check-in at Granlibakken.  According to Larry and Pat - They'd “be delighted to have folks visit our town house in Lakeridge Shores, which overlooks the valley to downtown Reno.  It has about 3000 sq. ft. - and handles thirsty people well.”  Specifics as to a time and how to get to their Reno town house will be sent later, but please schedule this event in your reunion plans.

As many of you likely know, the Lake Tahoe area is special.  The Lake Tahoe area has long been one of the most desirable recreational destinations in the world.  Year-round events and activities are rich in culture and action.  The geography of the lake and the Sierra Nevada Mountains are unique and gorgeous.  There are activities galore, both active and passive, for your enjoyment.  Please visit the Granlibakken web site for additional information about the Lake Tahoe region or google Lake Tahoe to explore a multitude of activities and destination sites.

Come celebrate our 52^nd Ames Senior High School reunion in California and, for many of us, our 70^th birthdays.  We’ll have a great time in a great place!

The class of 1956 will hold our 50th reunion on September 21,22 and 23, 2006 with a get-together at Gateway Canter Hotel, cash bar and plenty of room to visit. With time on Friday, September 22 to visit the City Hall, our old High School, Reiman Gardens, Ada Hayden Park, Ames High School, one of the area golf courses or whatever. That evening we will gather at Hickory Hall for the evening meal and visiting. The morning of Saturday, September 23rd we will have brunch at the Scheman building. Watch for further information after the first of the year regarding your input for a booklet and a return form to let us know that you will be attending.

AHS class of 1966 40th reunion is now History and a fantastic Memory

The class of '66 40 year reunion was held Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th of June 2006.

AHS Class of 1966 -- 40^th REUNION

This was a time to meet new friends, renew friendships, and just have a plain good time.

The class of ’66 is raising funds to replace the auditorium seats at Ames High School. The goal is $100,000, we have a long way to go but it can be done.

Thanks to the planning committee: Bill Beckman, Kathy Cooper, Dee Dreezen, Jim Hedden, Tim McKinley, Howard Randles, Bill Schoenenberger, Sharon (Bunce) Shone, Vicki (Voelker) Sivesind, Kathy Svec, Gail Sullivan, Dee Ann (Daley) and John Weiss (class of ’65), Dee (Gilreath) and Ed Wilson. Reunion Goals:
Our goal for this 40^th reunion is to have at least 200 of our classmates attend (out of approximately 350 that graduated in 1966), as well as a large number of our classmates’ spouses/significant others/family. We came close, 130 alumni attended one or two days. In addition there were 70 guests.

The Committee hoped that:

1. all participants will look forward to the reunion, enjoy it while there, and remember the experience with fondness and a smile,

2. and, at the reunion, everyone will feel welcome, have lots of fun and feel included in the activities.

The consensus is that the class was most successful in the above two goals. Reconnection, new connections, what a grand way to know that you were a part of a great class.

Reunion Dates:
Friday, June 23, 2006 through Saturday June 24, with an “unofficial start date” of Thursday, June 22 for those who wish to play golf. 

Reunion Events:
Thursday:  Although not an “official reunion event,” it was agreed that it would be fun to offer a golf outing for those classmates and spouses who wish to arrive a day or two early and play a round of golf.

Friday Evening: An informal mixer at the Gateway Center with substantial hors d'oeuvres or buffet so that attendees can get dinner and stay for the evening to socialize. An “open bar” would be offered with attendees covering own drink costs.

Saturday morning: Optional Saturday morning (say 10:00 or 10:30 am) tour of AHS offered by Bill Ripp, if he is willing to do so. LARGEST GROUP TO GO ON THE TOUR ACCORDING TO BILL.

Saturday afternoon: No “official” reunion event – however - beginning +/- noon on Saturday, an informal gathering place will be designated so that those wishing to socialize would know where to find their classmates. Possibly the new “Olde Main” brewpub on Main Street in Ames. The OLD Main was great.

Saturday evening:  The “big” event in the Sun Room at the Memorial Union.  It will include a sit-down dinner (either buffet style or served at the table), a few short speeches of welcome and recognition, fun awards and/or a reunion game.  It was suggested that the cheerleaders could lead a cheer or two, the glee club could perform, etc.

Hope to provide dancing to either a good live band or music provided by a DJ and his/her music machine (as long as he/she knows and plays our music!) and (possibly) entertainment by a comedian, magician or other professional. This should be a fun gathering and include lots of opportunity for interaction and laughter.  The Echoes of Des Moines walked us down memory lane with a great range of music from the ‘60s.

Sunday morning:  Nothing.  Sleep late or get up for a leisurely breakfast.  (That tug-of-war, trivia bowl and pick-up basketball game will have to wait until we are 63 years old!)

Reunion Costs to Attendees
The goal is to keep the reunion such that virtually everyone in the class will be able to both afford to come. Suggesting $50 for the two primary reunion events, the Friday evening mixer and the Saturday evening dinner and dance, excluding drinks – though this fee is tentative at this time (January 2005).

Some of the class members may like to serve as “sponsors” of certain events, effectively subsidizing the costs so that the events are breakeven.

AHS Class of ‘81 Experiences Collective  “Flashback” – June 23-25, 2006

Classmates and guests met in Ames this past June to celebrate our 25th (Silver) reunion: “Flashback.” Could we really be this old? As one of the onsite decorative banners quipped: “Definitely not oldies; certainly goodies!” Thanks for printing those signs, Hope Bockhoeven Arthur.

HERE’S HOW THE WEEKEND FLASHED BY:

FLASHBACK Friday, June 23: The big weekend opened with a casual gathering at Olde Main Brewing Company. Classmate Scott Griffen created this hotspot restaurant/pub/microbrewery in 2004. Over 115 AHSers enjoyed drinkables, eatables, and the best company we’ve enjoyed since at least five years ago.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: The reunion committee has been meeting monthly at Olde Main Brewing Co. since 2005 to plan this unique reunion for the entire class. Communication about reunion plans to classmates were handled via e-mail and snail-mail. Jodi Peterson Nelson once again finessed the entire mailing list, registration, payments, as well as database updates. Registration was facilitated with a website donated, designed, and updated by Jeff Mann. Thanks mainly to those two, the Class of ‘81 has entered the digital world—despite our pre-pc graduation date!

FLASHBACK Saturday Morn, June 24: Morning dawned with 1981 golfers joining the All-AHS-Alumni Golf Tournament, held at Veenker Golf Course.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: Very nice collaborative planning on Gary Gorman’s part.

FLASHBACK Saturday Eve, June 24: Classmates and guests hit the registration table for our big evening event at 6:30 p.m. (thanks to AHS ‘80 grads Cathy Hunt Adams and Karen Folkman Belz for graciously welcoming and directing attendees – this was a reciprocated event as last year three 1981 grads handled the registration table for the 1980 class reunion event) The Saturday evening site has been around Ames since before we graduated: The Towers on the Iowa State campus. However, the Knapp Storms Dining Complex -- formally a cafeteria and commons for two of the dorms- - has been elegantly renovated since demolition of the two dormitories in 2005.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: Reunion committee members first learned of potential for this new event site far before the demolition “spectacular.” We took a leap of faith to reserve the date, and were hosted by ISU Catering for a renovation-in-process committee meeting, and food tasting. We’ve heard so many positive comments from reunion attendees that it was the absolute right place to book. Ames is fortunate to have another large social space with such great amenities. Kudos to Lisa Miller Ailshie for finding this site.

FLASHBACK: Dinner was served on an artistic buffet arrangement adorned in orange and black, and topped off with a huge sheet cake sporting the Flashback logo. Thanks to Liz Nostawich Lunaburg (catering professional) the spread was to-die-for, and cost-effective for our group. The atmosphere was more than just AHS colors; amazing decor focused on the music that we listened to and loved back in our day — all of which has proved it’s staying power with today’s generation (er, our KIDS!). We were lucky enough to secure the well-known local talent of Redz Band and the Sofa Kings to play those classic tunes on the outdoor patio. Classmates rocked out, and weren’t even phased by a couple passing summer rain showers (hey, it IS Iowa!).

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: Connie Kincsweski Johnson created some of the most meaningful decorations ever, forming candle holders out of CDs and cassette tapes. And for the outdoor arena she crafted paint-can-citronella-holders with holes that formed “AHS 81.” Then Ann Wessman graciously loaned her extensive (and exquisite) album collection ... We took the covers, placed them in plastic sleeves, and adorned the columns throughout the event space — for a simply awesome effect.

FLASHBACK: Jodi Peterson Nelson addressed us after dinner, to share the story about Jack Mendenhall’s Wrestling Scholarship, which had nearly run out of funds (side note: Jodi’s son was honored with the 2006 Mendenhall Scholarship). Thanks to Jodi’s sincere love for the Mendenhall’s and her heartfelt speech, the scholarship has been revived.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES:  Classmate Dave Anderson of Ames Silversmithing donated an original-designed sterling silver necklace featuring a garnet, toward the Mendenhall scholarship effort. Teresa Albertson deftly handled the auction for this coveted item—in fact it was the best entertainment of the evening! --and garnered a winning $1,000 bid, bringing the total our class raised that weekend to keep the heartbeat of the Mendenhall scholarship going to $1,143.

FLASHBACK:  Deb Frye Tjelta added a beautiful tribute display to our deceased classmates, in support of the memorial classmates scholarship effort that we launched at this 25th reunion. Melissa Johnson McCormick crafted an amazing display of classmates, as well as AHS teachers.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES:  Through the generosity of our class, $1,687 was collected to begin a scholarship in the name of AHS Class of 1981.  David Hoover has taken the lead on this endeavor and is working diligently with the Ames Education Foundation.  Watch your mail and our website:  Ameshigh1981.com for new information.  Thanks to Jeff Mann for keeping this updated.

FLASHBACK:  Teresa Albertson solicited support from local establishments to give out prizes to various categories of people in attendance.  The categories ranged from those with the oldest children, to the person that traveled the least to get to the reunion.

1986    was held August 11-13 2006

Our 20th reunion was held August 11-13, registration information was sent after Memorial Day.

Friday August 11 - Reunion Kick-off

from 8:00 pm  Casual gathering at Ames' first brewpub,

Saturday August 12 (several events)

11:00 am  Tour of  Ames High School AHS with Bill Ripp
Show your kids your high school!
See & hear about all of the changes since 1986.

1:00-4:00 pm Golf Outing & Family Pool Time
at Ames Golf and Country Club (AGCC),
5752 George Washington Carver Ave., North Ames
Free family access to the AGCC pool.
Snacks available at the Clubhouse.
Golf Tournament: 1:00pm tournament with prizes.
$35 seperate fee, includes cart and green fees.

10 Year 1996 AHS Reunion, A Grand Success!

Thank you graduates for making our 10 Year Reunion such a great success!!  We counted over 100 of us showing our faces that weekend.  That is a fantastic turnout.  Please stay tuned to our website: www.ahs96.net as it will be going under some major renovations over the next 6 months. We hope to have some photos posted shortly.  The new website will include a message board to connect with one another, a section to put together regional get-togethers, and post recent photos amongst other features.

If you are interested in a Memory Book from the reunion please contact Amalia Sollars.  The books are $7.00 (including shipping).

Soon we will be posting the committee for the next reunion.  If you are interested in assisting please  contact the committee convener when posted.

Last but not least, if you have not filled out an information form for our ongoing Memory Book, or if your address ever changes,  please do so at the www.ahs96.net website by downloading the "Reunion Booklet" form.  Then send it in. That will help a lot!
